Standardized tests

What is your opinion on the standardized tests that you take in academic classes?  There is an EOCT, benchmarktests, and also chapter tests.  Do you learn the material or do you just study to take the test?  Do you think there is too much testing?  If so, how could you learn differently?

Remember to answer ini 2-3 well written sentences and respond to someone else’s comments later in the week.

  1. I think that we simply learn what is on the test. That is all the teachers ever talk about are the standardized tests. I think that there are too many crazy tests. With me, tests are not an acurate way to see what I know. I almost always do worst on tests than I do on homework because I know it’s important and that it counts for accuracy.

  2. Andy Brown is completely right. All the teachers give us huge test that count like 45% of our final grade, so if u do bad on it, it brings your grade down by so many points. We should just have a more little test that count for less . I think that would be so much better.

  3. I know really Jacob if you fail the final test you don’t really have a chance to pass.

  4. i think you should get to chose what classes you want to take the EOCT in. But you should still learn everything that would be on the tests, just for knowledge

  5. Totally off topic, but do you have to be in honors classes to participate in the gov. honors program?

  6. I agree with nixon we have great grades for the whole semester then they give you a test thatcounts for a huge chunk of your average and it drops your grade a lot if you do bad.The stuff on the test well most of it we’ve never gone of the stuff and they expect you to know it. It also doesnt help to have a biology teacher that has no clue what their doing no names mentioned starts with an N and ends with olan.

  7. I agree with you garrett, there are certian biology teachers in this school, whose name starts with N and ends with olan, that do not teach you what you need to know. You will fail.

  8. chapter tests are a part of life. well at least school……but i’m not sure i like all of those other tests. i guess i can tolerate mid-term and final exams but there kinda of hard. when i study for tests i only study real hard for the classes that i like, the classes that i think i will need later in life.

  9. I don’t like standerized tests at all. First you get all nervous not knowing if you’re going to pass the test. Then when you finally take the test you don’t even recognize any of the questions on the test and you end up failing the test that counts for about 40% of your grade. But every now and then you will get a test that is super easy. But I still don’t like taking standerized tests.

  10. I think standardized tests are a waste of time. :/ I learn plenty during classes, but then, at the end of the week, you get knocked over the head with some kind of quiz or test. It really gets annoying. It’s even worse when you basically have to read between the lines in your textbook for the answer to some of the questions. It would definitely be better if they fully explained everything in the chapter or subject of the tests. If they did that, you’d spend less time cramming, and more time actually learning and getting the questions right.

  11. Joseph is right they are a waste of time.

  12. WHAT? very discriptive Chandler

  13. I both agree and disagree with Joseph. Standardized tests may seem like a waste of time, but if you do not pass the standardized test, that could mean that you do not know the material. For example, If you do not know the material in chapter one of math, would you be able to pass the test on chapter 2? Also, if you do not pass the Algebra 1 EOCT that could also mean that you do not know the material and you would not be able to go on to Geometry. I agree because the benchmark tests are a waste of time, because if you passed all of the other tests doesn’t that mean that you know the material?

  14. I kinda half agree with Joe on that one, most tests DO seem pointless. But benchmark tests aren’t there to see if you just know the material, it is there to see how you use it in a short period of time. That is why they are harder, longer, and more annoying, but they are also most of the times remakes of EOCTs.

  15. Yes, but if they are just remakes of the EOCT and they are to see what you can do in a short period of time, isn’t that what regular test do? Also, if they are just remakes of EOCTs why do they make you take them both along with the chapter/unit tests?

  16. the benchmarks are designed to give you a taste of what EOCTs are like, without actually giving you up-to-date questions. the standardized tests are just that. they are basic material from areas that you have recently studied to “test” whether or not you were actually paying attention and if you actually know the material.

  17. I disagree. The bench mark test is to test what you have ”recently studied”. Is that not what a regular chapter test does? If not what is a chapter test for if a benchmark is to test what you have recently covered. Also, if you were not paying attention in class, doesn’t that mean that you didn’t know the material in that chapter, so if you failed the chapter tests, you would probably fail the benchmark test and if you passed the chapter tests you would probably pass the benchmark. Again, there is usually a direct correlation between the grades of the two tests. Also, the chapter tests ”usually” give up to date questions pertaining to the EOCT rather then the benchmark tests.

  18. it seems as if you got benchmarks and chapter tests confused.
and in most cases if you fail the chapter, and it is JUST that one chapter, then since the benchmarks are later in the year, you should have a good chance of getting a decent grade on the benchmark.

  19. I miss typed the previous post. What I was getting at is that in some cases, one chapter relates to another which relates to another chapter. So if you didn’t get what was being taught in the chapter, you ”MIGHT” have problems in the next chapter, so you ”MIGHT” fail the chapter test. You also might fail the benchmark.

  20. yes, that is the case, in math. but in other cases, like world history, where it is mostly “these peeps moved here. those peeps moved over there. they fought. lots of peeps died.”
“chapter two, in this other country, some of the peeps moved over there, while these peeps made slaves of them and moved them to ANOTHER place.”
do you see what i mean?”

  21. yes but still some things lead to another

  22. sigh… i give up, there is no convincing you…

  23. My goodness….

Throwing this out there and it might make a bunch of people angry… Could the benchmark tests (which were stated as remakes of the EOCTs) be there to “train” you to take the “test” that is at the end. Counties get funding based on passing rates on EOCTs, so if more people already know the format and the types of questions, there is a greater possibilty of passing EOCTs. Do the benchmark tests just encourage memorization? Or, have you truly learned about the peeps moving from one place to another and peeps dying? (Not all counties have benchmark testing…not all counties have such a high EOCT pass rate…)

  24. HEY how come i’m getting 0s for the blog assignments?
dad is getting on to me for the lack of grades in this class, and the blogness is the only thing with 0s.

  25. For me tests in general have never been really hard for me. Sometimes they give us huge breaks on the tests. And you have to be literally retarted to fail the EOCT because they curve it rediculasly like if you got a 60 they gave you a 75.

  26. True, but is curving it really a good idea?

  27. No Salsa, Tests are just a way for teacher’s to take the day off. Come on, how hard is it to punch a few buttons on a test maker, sleep the day of the test, then run the scantrons through a machine. Its all a conspiricy!

  28. I hate taking tests.
